Support our Return to the St James Theatre

We are excited for the Royal New Zealand Ballet to return to its permanent home the St James Theatre, in 2022.

September 2022 Update

We are excited that the refurbishment of the RNZB’s home is now underway.

Maycroft Construction were able to start works in mid-July, after completing the $42m seismic upgrade of the St James Theatre for Wellington City Council. The theatre has now re-opened to the public, and it was pleasing to see crowds of happy patrons return to this much-loved venue during our season of Cinderella.

Refurbishment of the two upper floors at the St James, which RNZB leases from WCC, will take seven months. We are on track to move our costume workshop back to the St James in November, with the dancers moving in January and the remaining staff in February 2023.

We met our original fundraising target, but unprecedented cost pressures and additional work undertaken to bring our Production Team in house means that the total cost of the refurbishment will be $4.58m.

Your support at this pivotal stage will make a significant difference to the future of your national ballet company. We need your help to get us over the finish line.

Total raised: $4.42m

Target: $4.58m

A NEW CREATIVE HUB FOR DANCE AND THE ARTS

Wellington’s iconic St James Theatre – home of the Royal New Zealand Ballet – will soon reopen to the public following a four-year closure for seismic strengthening and renovations.

With your help, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and its home will be a cornerstone for our community and the creative arts for the benefit of Wellington and Aotearoa.

Our moment. Our vision.
