Imagine if you bought a new pair of shoes every Monday and had to throw them out by Sunday because they were worn through! This isn’t just a fairytale, but the reality of life in a busy ballet company.
Each year the Royal New Zealand Ballet buys more than 900 pairs of pointe shoes. In 2026, the cost of purchasing pointe shoes, ‘ballet flats’ and boots will exceed $120,000.
Every Gift Matters
Supporting the Pointe Shoe Appeal is one of the most practical and essential ways you can help your national ballet company, and every donation will make a difference.
- $40 covers a pair of ballet flats
- $90 supports a pair of men’s boots
- $135 provides a pair of custom pointe shoes
- $675 supplies one dancer with pointe shoes for a month
- $2,000 supplies one dancer performing a principal role, such as Odette/Odile or Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, with pointe shoes for a national tour
Every pair of pointe shoes is custom-made to fit the unique needs of each dancer. The right fit is vital for protecting joints, preventing injuries, and allowing our dancers to perform at their very best. We work closely with trusted suppliers to ensure that every dancer has the shoes that are right for them, so they can just dance.
