This April we will perform two newly commissioned works by Kiwi Choreographers in Residence Sarah Foster-Sproull and Loughlan Prior.

Artistic Director Patricia Barker commissioned Loughlan Prior’s Ultra Violet for a short season at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in early 2020, however COVID-19 quickly dampened plans. The work has been stowed away until now and Wanaka audiences will be the first to see the expanded work. Ultra Violet explores how birds and insects see at the ultraviolet end of the colour spectrum, journeying through the musical landscape to create and discover colours beyond the edges of a humans’ visible spectrum. The work is accompanied by composer Claire Cowan’s piano trio of the same name.

Sarah Foster-Sproull is also creating a brand-new work, so new it is still in it’s creation stage. We can’t wait to share more about this piece that focuses on the theme of mortality as it comes to life.

Presented by the Wanaka Festival of Colour in association with the Royal New Zealand Ballet. These performances are not part of the RNZB’s 2021 subscription season.
