This winter, audiences around New Zealand experienced the achingly beautiful story of The Firebird, by the RNZB’s award-winning Choreographer in Residence, Loughlan Prior, commissioned by RNZB Artistic Director Patricia Barker.

Following truly memorable live performances in theatres across the North Island, we are now lighting up laptops, tablets and smart TVs for you, and ballet lovers around the world, to see The Firebird up close, with live stage footage augmented by specially shot close-ups and enhanced visual effects. This is ballet like you’ve never seen it before, a full cinematic experience.

Generations of choreographers, from Michel Fokine, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins to Alexei Ratmansky, have been inspired by the elemental power of Stravinsky’s music, and by the Firebird herself – a timeless, untameable force, and a bringer of change, hope and rebirth. Loughlan Prior and Tracy Grant Lord have reimagined The Firebird for a different time: one in which the natural world is threatened and humanity is staring into the abyss of extinction.  It is a moving and inspiring tale of human folly, redemption and renewal.

With spectacular digital animation by POW Studios and dramatic lighting by Jon Buswell, the artistic team have created an immersive, cinematic world, driven by peaks and valleys of intensity within the musical score.  Described by reviewers as ‘brave’, ‘innovative’ and ‘welcome’, with an ‘utterly breathtaking’ performance in the title role by RNZB Soloist, Ana Gallardo Lobaina, this incredible new ballet is not to be missed.
