Coppélia combines laughter, mystery, romance and the finest classical ballet – from spectacular character dances to the grand romantic pas de deux – in a fun-filled spectacle.
Jack-the-lad Franz is infatuated with the beautiful Coppélia without realising she is in fact a life-sized doll, created by the mysterious inventor Dr Coppélius.
His feisty fiancée Swanhilde is disgusted by his disloyalty, but when Franz’s life is in danger, she tricks the doctor by disguising herself as Coppélia (the doll) in order to save her love. Crisis averted, the couple marry and celebrate with their friends in the village square.
New Zealand dance legend Sir Jon Trimmer reprises the great character role of Dr Coppélius, a role he first performed for the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 1964.*
