The Royal New Zealand Ballet acknowledges, with great sadness the death, in Christchurch, of June Kerr, née Greenhalgh. A dancer with the New Zealand Ballet during the 1960s, June, together with husband Russell, Director of the company from 1962 – 68, was a much-loved member of the RNZB family.
June began her performing career in the UK, with Festival Ballet, now English National Ballet. As one of the dancers building a performing career overseas who chose to ‘come home’ to New Zealand to be a part of the fledgling New Zealand Ballet, June played an important role in the growth of professional ballet in New Zealand. Her performances, especially in the works created by Russell for the company, are remembered with admiration and affection.
Seeing June and Russell at performances in Christchurch has long been a special part of RNZB visits to the city, and an inspiration to the whole company. We extend our love and sympathy to Russell, Yvette and David and the Kerr family.
