Giselle: in memory of Bill Sheat

The Royal New Zealand Ballet is honoured to dedicate our 2021 season of Giselle to the memory of Bill Sheat (1930 – 2021).

Bill made a profound contribution to the management and governance of the arts in New Zealand, and especially in Wellington, over more than five decades. In addition to his exceptional service to the Royal New Zealand Ballet, through the Arts Council, as our Administrator, as a member of the Board and as our longest-serving Chair, Bill’s foresight and tenacity was central to the preservation of two of Wellington’s great arts venues, the Embassy Theatre and the Opera House.

Thanks to Bill’s vision and his indomitable spirit, Wellington’s dancers, actors, musicians and the film community, and the thousands of people who enjoy their work, have venues to be proud of in the heart of our capital city. We remember him with deep gratitude and with affection and are privileged to welcome his family and friends to Giselle
