Tuesday 31 August, 2021

Performances of The Firebird with Paquita in Christchurch and Palmerston North cancelled

Following the confirmation of Level 3 Covid-19 restrictions, the Royal New Zealand Ballet has decided, with regret, to cancel the performances of The Firebird with Paquita originally scheduled for 26, 27 and 28 August at the Isaac Theatre Royal, Christchurch, and 2 September at the Regent on Broadway, Palmerston North.

All community and education events due to take place around performances, including the schools’ performance of The Firebird in Christchurch on 27 August, are also cancelled.

In line with the RNZB’s Covid-19 ticketing policy, all ticket holders will be entitled to a full refund. Ticket holders will be contacted by the agency who issued their tickets, either the Royal New Zealand Ballet, or Ticketek, with further information regarding this process.

The RNZB Education team will contact all ticket holders for education and community events including the schools’ matinee in Christchurch and the audio described performance on 28 August.

The RNZB’s production of The Firebird is currently available to purchase and view on demand via Tikstream. The company will shortly be announcing details of an on-demand broadcast of Paquita

The RNZB is committed to ensuring the continued health and well-being of all audience members, artists and staff. While the company is deeply disappointed by these cancellations, supporting our community’s journey towards the lifting of restrictions and the resumption of live events, once it is safe to do so, is our greatest priority.

The RNZB looks forward to continuing to entertain audiences in Aotearoa and overseas via our digital programme, and to returning to stages with The Ryman Healthcare Season of A Midsummer Night’s Dream from the end of October.

Following the Government update on Friday 20 August, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is postponing scheduled performances and events in Christchurch this week (26 – 28 August). It will not be possible for the company to stage any performances or public events until Aotearoa returns to Level One Covid-19 restrictions.

This includes:

  • All evening performances of The Firebird with Paquita (26, 27 and 28 August)
  • The touch tour and audio description for the visually-impaired due to take place on 28 August
  • The schools’ matinee of The Firebird on Friday 27 August
  • Schools’ workshops
  • Open classes

The company is currently talking with the Isaac Theatre Royal regarding dates for rescheduling and will update ticket holders as soon as possible.

Ticket holders should retain their tickets for transfer into a rescheduled performance. Should it not be possible to attend on rescheduled dates, or if performances have to be cancelled, a full refund will be available in line with the RNZB’s Covid-19 ticketing policy

The RNZB is also due to perform in Palmerston North on the evening of 2 September. The company will advise ticket holders as soon as possible if this date has to change in any way, and again, in the event of cancellation, a full refund will apply.

The RNZB takes the continued health and well-being of all audience members, artists and staff very seriously. While the company will miss performing this week as planned, they look forward to returning to stages later in the spring, and in the meantime, connecting with arts lovers of all ages through the Live In Your Living Room broadcasts

Royal New Zealand Ballet announces change to national tour of The Firebird with Paquita.

Due to the community cases of Covid-19 in Tāmaki Makaurau and the nationwide Alert Level 4 lockdown, the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) has regretfully announced the cancellation of The Firebird with Paquita this Saturday 21 August at the Regent Theatre, Dunedin.

Artistic Director Patricia Barker says, “We are very disappointed to not make it down to Dunedin for this performance, which was so wonderfully received in Wellington, Napier and Auckland, and with rave reviews. We are grateful, though, to have had the chance to bring ballet lovers in those cities New Zealand choreographer Loughlan Prior’s courageous new, reimagined production of The Firebird. It truly soared.”

Other upcoming performances, due to take place at Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal on Thursday 26, Friday 27 and 28 August, and Palmerston North’s Regent on Broadway on 2 September, are currently still going ahead. The RNZB will review the situation following any changes in Government guidelines and will contact all ticket holders directly if any further performances are affected.

The RNZB Education team will be in touch with schools involved in education and community activities, including the schools’ matinee of The Firebird due to take place at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Friday 27 August.

The RNZB will shortly be announcing digital seasons of The Firebird and Paquita, which will give audiences who have missed out the chance to experience these sensational performances.

Dunedin ticket holders will be contacted directly regarding their refund and exchange options.

Please refer to the RNZB’s Covid-19 ticketing policy for further information regarding exchanges, refunds and holding ticket credit on accounts for future performances.
