Christchurch-born Corey Baker is a creative force, pushing the boundaries of dance. Corey’s innovation and bravado has led him to success as an award-winning choreographer and filmmaker. Taking ballet and contemporary into unconventional settings, including playgrounds, shopping centres and even Antarctica, Corey’s perspective of dance is highly inventive and strays from the traditional norms of dance.
After training in Christchurch and Sydney, Corey danced at the Ballet Theatre Basel of Switzerland and then went on to join BalletBoyz in the UK. In 2010, he founded Corey Baker Dance to create and produce his own work, collaborating on projects as rehearsal director, choreographer, teacher and movement director.
In April 2018, Corey captured the imagination of a global audience with his dance film ‘The First Dance’ featuring RNZB dancer Madeleine Graham. This was the first major dance work to be created in Antarctica and its development continued with ‘The Last Dance’, a piece that premiered as part of the RNZB’s Dancing with Mozart tour on 31 May 2018, highlighting the impact of climate change.
