Matthew Slattery joined the Royal New Zealand Ballet as an Artist in 2022 and was promoted to Soloist in 2023.
In 2022, he performed featured roles in Alice Topp’s Aurum and Twyla Tharp’s Waterbaby Bagetelles™ as part of Venus Rising. As part of Tutus on Tour he danced in Shaun James Kelly’s The Ground Beneath Our Feet. As part of the Ballet Bites digital season he performed in Alice Topp’s Absence of Light.
Matthew began his dance training at Rosie O’Sullivan’s School of Dance in Cooma, Australia. At the age of 16, he moved to Sydney to join the Talent Development High School and went on to complete the full-time Brent Street ballet and contemporary course under Christine Keith. In 2009, he joined the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City.
Matthew performed throughout New York and toured with the Joffrey Studio Company. After two years at the School he was offered a contract with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, where he worked under Ethan Stiefel. In 2014 he joined The Boston Ballet and was promoted to Second Soloist in 2018. He has worked closely with choreographers such as William Forsythe, Wayne McGregor, Alexander Ekman, John Neumeier, Mikko Nissinen and Jorma Elo, and danced roles in works by George Balanchine, Jiří Kylián, August Bournonville, John Cranko and Jerome Robbins.
