Audio Described Performances

Hansel & Gretel – Encore!
Friday 29 May 7.30pm, Saturday 30 May 1.30pm
and Sunday 31 May 10.30am (NZST)

A link will become public at the time of each broadcast (refresh your webpage if needed).

While we are unable to invite you to a live performance for the moment, the RNZB is delighted to broadcast some of our fantastic back catalogue, right into your living room! This is free and available to everyone.

Back by popular demand, the RNZB is delighted to present special encore performances of Hansel & Gretel, a new two-act ballet that premiered in 2019. In collaboration with Audio Described Aotearoa we will be providing audio description for these performances.

Introductory notes will provide you with vital information about the costumes, set and lighting and give you background information about the performances.

For all enquiries, please email pascale@rnzb.org.nz  or contact RNZB Education, Community & Accessibility Manager Pascale Parenteau,  021 678 521

Sleeping Beauty – November, December 2020
Audio Described Performances

These performances give vision impaired patrons the opportunity to attend a performance of The Ryman Healthcare Season of Sleeeping Beauty with trained audio describer Nicola Owen broadcasting live commentary which patrons will hear through an earpiece. There will be audio described performances at both schools’ matinees and public performances of Sleeping Beauty. See below for more details.

A free Touch Tour and an introduction to ballet terminology will be held before  the show. Patrons can walk through the set, touch set pieces, feel costumes, handle key props and learn more about the production. An RNZB Dance Educator will explain various ballet terms and the shapes and quality of the movements from the ballet.

Nicola Owen is one of the first trained Audio Describers in New Zealand. She has worked as an Audio Describer since 2011 and she has described live shows including musicals, opera and awards ceremonies. She has also led a series of Audio Described guided walks and Gallery/Museum tours for groups of blind people. She even coordinated social events for the Association of Blind Citizens Auckland branch, of which she is an associate member. She is a qualified rehabilitation worker for working with blind people and has experience in teaching sighted guiding skills. She recently led her first Audio Describer training for Arts Access Aotearoa.
