What we offer
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
About us
The Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) is a national touring ballet company and the premier dance company of Aotearoa New Zealand. We have built a reputation for artistic innovation with dynamic dancers and creative choreography delivering productions for the national and international audiences unique to Aotearoa and classical ballet. The core touring programme is supported by digital, educational, and community-based ballet. Established 70 years ago, we are intrinsic to Aotearoa New Zealand’s national cultural heritage.
About the role
The Artistic Director and Executive Director are joint CEOs leading the RNZB both reporting to the Board of Trustees. It is essential that the two Directors work collaboratively with respect, co-operation, and a commitment to being effective co-leaders. The AD sets the artistic vision for the RNZB through staging works from the ballet canon and commissioning inspiring new works. They manage and select the dancers of the company and artistic staff, also having oversight of the health team to ensure the best physical and wellness outcomes for the company’s artists. They are a member of the Senior Leadership Team and liaise across departments working closely with the Education, Outreach, and Accessibility Manager. They are the public face of the company and uphold the artistic reputation for the organisation, engaging with various stakeholders, private, corporate and government.
About you
The Artistic Director will be an inspirational and respected person with outstanding artistic and leadership qualities. The ideal candidate will be a confident, articulate, and empathetic leader with a bold and compelling vision that will advance the company along the path reflecting our mission and goals. They should also demonstrate the ability to have nurtured talent, through their career as a dancer, choreographer, or balletic leader. They should also have a good understanding of the RNZB, its relationship with the New Zealand School of Dance, and the unique cultural environment of Aotearoa New Zealand. Alongside the Executive Director you will grow the appreciation of ballet and lift the Royal New Zealand Ballet to new heights.
