The Royal New Zealand Ballet is a company of dynamic dancers from diverse backgrounds and presents an eclectic repertoire of classic and contemporary works both across the country and beyond New Zealand shores.

Director of People and Culture

  • Full time, but consideration would be given to 32 hours per week
  • Sole charge; strategic and operational focus
  • Member of the Senior Leadership Team
The Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) is a company of dynamic dancers, performing an eclectic repertoire of outstanding dance for national and international audiences, whilst continuing to build a style that is ultimately unique to the RNZB and Aotearoa, New Zealand.

The RNZB is based in Wellington and tours throughout New Zealand and internationally, presenting at least 70 performances a year. It’s expected they’ll be back in their home theatre – the iconic St James Theatre – in early 2022, once earthquake strengthening work is complete.

The Director of People and Culture has sole charge responsibility for ensuring the overall people capability of the RNZB. Supported by two direct reports (Office Administrator and EA/HR Administrator), the Director provides a wide range of strategic and operational HR support to the Ballet’s 70 staff, which includes their 40 dancers.

You’ll provide expert HR advice, develop and maintain best practice HR systems and policies, facilitate training and leadership development, lead and support a variety of HR projects and initiatives and provide ongoing support and guidance to management and staff.

You’ll be customer focussed with the ability to truly partner with and work alongside managers and staff, quickly understanding their needs and coaching and mentoring them to build excellent people capability.

The environment is dynamic, and the organisation is on a journey to reflect and celebrate New Zealand’s bicultural foundation and its diverse multicultural population  in work practices and communications. This is an exciting time to join them on this journey and play a key role in helping to shape the RNZB’s cultural competency.
