RNZB National Mentor Programme

The RNZB National Mentor Programme is an exciting opportunity for dedicated young dance students to tap into the professional experience of the dancers of the RNZB. The selected students will receive guidance and professional advice from their mentor as well as free access to RNZB company classes and performances throughout the year.

Selected mentored students:

  • have quality time with their mentor through the year
  • keep in contact with their mentor via Movitae* with options for easy video communication and feedback
  • watch company class and rehearsal while the dancers are on tour
  • spend time backstage with the company
  • receive two complimentary tickets to selected performances
  • participate in exclusive master classes
  • spend a day in Wellington at the RNZB’s home. Students will observe class and rehearsals, take part in a class and visit backstage workrooms, including wardrobe.

*Movitae is an interactive video learning platform specialising in physical performance. Learn more here.

Feedback received from two of this year’s participants

Dominic Burrows, Mentor Student from Invercargill, age 15 – 5 years learning ballet
The National Mentor Programme was an amazing experience! RNZB dancer Shaun Kelly was a wonderful, lively and generous mentor who gave great advice. Being around Shaun and the dancers of the RNZB was a really beneficial experience as it inspired me to keep moving forward with my dancing. The highlight for me was the Wellington Mentor Day; the opportunity to see the dancers rehearse in the studios as well as seeing how everything worked behind-the-scenes.

Stella Byers, Mentor Programme Student from Auckland, age 13 – 10 years learning ballet
I would like to thank the RNZB for the amazing opportunity to be selected for this year’s National Mentor Programme. I particularly enjoyed meeting my mentor Tonia Looker and to spend time with her at the performances. It really did make me feel like I was a part of the RNZB Family. I learnt a lot from Tonia and I will definitely keep in touch with her, as I continue on my journey towards a career in ballet.
