Selected mentored students:

  • have quality time with their mentor through the year
  • keep in contact with their mentor via Movitae* with options for easy video communication and feedback
  • watch company class and rehearsal while the dancers are on tour
  • spend time backstage with the company
  • receive two complimentary tickets to selected performances
  • participate in exclusive master classes
  • spend a day in Wellington at the RNZB’s home. Students will observe class and rehearsals, take part in a class and visit backstage workrooms, including costume.

Participants’ feedback

Aidan Tully, aged 13, 2018 Mentor programme student from Auckland

The RNZB National Mentors Program has been a fantastic experience for me because it has given me great insight into the professional world of dancing, particularly at the RNZB, which is where I aspire to dance professionally. My Mentor Paul Mathews, is in his thirteenth year in the company, so he has seen and experienced a lot more than other dancers, and he gave me some great information and advice regarding male ballet. The Mentors program was highly inspirational and informative, and I would very much recommend it to any young dancers in New Zealand because it is an amazing resource to have.

Sophia Bae,  age 16, 2018 Mentor programme student from Christchurch

The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s National Mentor Programme is a unique and special programme for students who aspire to be professional ballet dancers. I am truly grateful for the opportunities and the experiences this programme has offered me. Each dancer is paired up with one of the company dancers and we get the opportunity to get to know the dancer and they share what the professional life is like. There is no other programme like this in New Zealand and I personally highly recommend it to any aspiring young dancers. It is an opportunity to be truly inspired by our national company the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
