Filippo Valmorbida was born in Arzignano, Italy. He began to dance at the age of five, in Vicenza.

In 2006 he attended the Youth America Grand Prix Semi Finals in Italy and was awarded a place in the final round at Lincoln Center in New York.

He started his professional training with a scholarship for the Elmhurst School for Dance in Association with Birmingham Royal Ballet in Birmingham (UK).

At the age of 14 he entered the ballet school of La Scala in Milan, graduating at the age of 18. During his years in Milan he performed Fritz and the Chinese Dance in The Nutcracker, Napoli and Gaité Parisienne.

Before joining the Royal New Zealand Ballet in January 2017, he was a soloist with the Jas Art Ballet in Milan, directed by principal dancers Sabrina Brazzo and Andrea Volpintesta.
